Q&A: Can car mileage ticker be changed in a car?

Can car mileage ticker be changed in a car?
I found a car that I want to buy for $ 2000. It is a 1999 Hyundai-Sonata and it has only 53000 miles. That is what the seller claims but my dad is telling me that he probably lowered the mileage somehow. I was wondering if that is possible. Thanks in advance for your answers.

Yes its possible, I know it can be done, yet I think its usually on older model cars, and I am also not quite sure how they do it when its electronic…why not just get a CARFAX report to be safe? And make sure the milage is right? You can find that out for free, I believe.

The electronic odometers are actually easier to alter than the old cable driven ones. Car Fax costs $ 35.
If the car appears to be in fairly good shape, the price sounds right (even if this is not the actual mileage).
If it’s electronic they are very hard to change as the mileage is in the memory of the ECM. If it’s just a manual gauge with the numbers on reels then they are still difficult to turn back, however you could go to the auto wreckers and take one out of a wrecked car with fewer miles and change them.
Yes. It’s possible on both analog and digital odometers. It is harder to do on digital gauges, but still possible with the right tools.
It is highly illegal though. You can run a CarFax check to see if there has been any evidence of odometer fraud. Does it mean the guy didn’t just turn it back recently? No, but it’s better than nothing.
You can also kind of tell by the condition of the car itself if the mileage is completely off. With only 53k on the odometer things should look pretty good. Have a mechanic check it out. They should be able to tell you if your engine looks all run down like there’s a whole lot more than 53k on it.
it is possible to tamper with the odometer it is also illegal.
Yes mileage can be altered
mileage wear indicators;
check the.brake pedal rubber for corner wear, sometimes metal is showing threw, 53,000 should be slightly worn
very pitted windshield from road sand, shows over 100,000 miles
headlight plastic covers very dull
check glove box for service slips with mileage
If the odometer is digital then it can not be tampered with except at the dealer. Since tampering is illegal a dealer won’t do it.
I would not assume the mileage has been fudged. I see low mileage older cars all the time. My own car is a 2003 with 19,800 miles.
