How do I increase gas mileage of my Toyota Camry?
I Bought a used 2001 Toyota Camry under the impression that it gives good gas mileage (about 24 mpg in city and 28 mpg on highways). However, I’m shocked to note that my camry gives about 17mpg in city. Does anyone know the cause and / or how to get this fixed.

I need to know if it’s a 4 cyl or V6……..change air filter and check tire pressure…..
Make sure the tires are inflated to the factory specs and make sure that the air filter is clean, spark plugs aren’t fouled..basically just get a tune up. That’s usually all you need.
accelerate more slowly
brake less and coast to stop more often
drive no faster than 55mph
turn off your AC in the summer
keep all windows rolled up at all times
keep all tires inflated to the appropriate PSI rating
Things like this can be changed by so many varying factors. What type of fuel your using, weather or not the car is loaded with equipment, the altitude of where your living, and so on and so on.
I will say that a Camry should be getting better gas mileage then that! Make sure your air pressure is good in your tires and try pumping in 93 octane. I for one cant run anything but 93, in my car else I get a rough idle.
Are your tires the size that is recommended in your owner’s manual? Be sure to keep your tires at the recommended psi and remove any excess weight (such as in the trunk). Are you using the grade of fuel that is recommended by the manufacturer for your particular model? Be sure to keep up with oil and filter changes so your engine is kept cleaner. Another factor is the kind of driving you do in the city, for example, if you hit a lot of traffic lights your mileage won’t be as good. Do you have a spoiler or any other mods that will cause air resistance?

FYI, according to http://www.internetautoguide.com/reviews/45-int/midsize-cars/toyota/camry/2001/index.html:
standard 4 cylinder = 24/33 mpg manual transmission, 23/32 mpg with the automatic
V6 = 20/27 mpg
