2008 Fuel Economy Comparison: Prius v Jetta v Focus v Smart

www.edmunds.com New 2009 Fuel Economy Comparison: www.youtube.com These days there are a lot of small cars pounding their chests and claiming they get the best gas mileage around. Well, we got tired of the talk and decided to settle the score. Right here, right now! We picked three cars from our long-term fleet known for squeezing extra miles out of every gallon of gas: the spunky 2008 Smart Fortwo with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine, the thrifty 2008 Ford Focus SES coupe with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with its legendary 1.9-liter “TDI” diesel engine. Then we added a heavily favored gasoline-electric hybrid to the mix: a 2008 Toyota Prius.

in europe the diesel is cheaper then gasolin si here jetta wins
@toyotaprius79
How can you know about whats a fun car if your defending the prius?
@tnralliart2600 it’s a diesel, diesel cars are no fun, no fast and no where near cool
I also forgot that I meant 56mpg US (highway) for the 2011 fortwo…Take that Prius…
None of the smart’s stats matter anymore. When Mercedes/Renault/Nissan created a partnership they upgraded the fortwo’s engine (among other aspects that people complained about). Through real world testing in Europe it gets 56mpg US. This is without reducing performance.
The whole spec sheet is available at Daimler’s news site:

@GarrettKeetley Perhaps you could look the specs up instead of arguing with me because you are sadly mistaken. The SRT Challenger has a 6.1 litre engine! The huge size means it makes gobs of torque! Much more torque than a turbo 1.9 litre!
@surethang27 i don’t hate challengers or anything, im just saying the jetta would have more torque
@GarrettKeetley i hate u. look up the specs
@surethang27 no, inline turbodiesels would create more torque
@GarrettKeetley U have to be messing with me right? Challenger has more torque too. About 190lb-ft more than the Jetta
@surethang27 ok, it might have more hp, but the tdi has more torque
@GarrettKeetley The Challenger has WAY more power. The SRT model has 425 horsepower.
@surethang27 the TDI probably has more power than the challenger
did you notice that the jetta tdi is the oldest car there? even though its a few years older than the other cars, it still got better highway mpg’s, i’d take the jetta tdi because their torque masters
1) As far as I know, diesel is more expensive in the US (right?). Here in germany, diesel is 20 eurocent cheaper AND the diesel gets better mpg compared to a petrol car
2) Next time they should test the diesel version of the smart, which uses even less fuel
@bliglum Actually, the mini has worse safety ratings, FACT…
Really, this road test is a joke. You cannot say who wins best mpg for a road trip!
The average smart owner gets 45-55mpg…
@creamyfilling102 It doesn’t need premium. smart only recommends premium to extend the life and performance of the engine way into high mileage, and to protect from engine knock. Many of smart owners run 87 with no problem.
@ieatlotsoftoast Beat is an understatement, it will DESTROY them…
@Piro42 The Edmond testing is flawed. They tested the cars in several environments for short times, because of which, none of the cars adapted well to new situations.
For example, the majority off smart owners get 45-55 MPG (actually recorded btw), and that’s real world driving and not some stupid road trip.
@tnralliart2600 How do you know, I can tell you’ve never driven a smart, I’m surprised at acceleration…
But yes, VWs are awesome…
@Phunker1 Iv noticed were i am in england diesel is slightly more expensive than petrol by like a penny lol
Hey, all these cars suck! hahahah! Buy a Dodge Challenger!
what do we learn here??
focus’s suck
You know, the smart gets horrific mileage for it’s claimed virtues… If I want a tiny car that gets ridiculous mileage and isn’t the safest on earth, I’ll go for a ‘97 Toyota Tercel. They can be had for as little as $1400, get similar mileage to the smart, seat 4 (5 if they’re small), have trunks, use readily available tires, run on regular unleaded, and are cheap to insure.
vw jetta is better the jetta is more beautiful and have better fuel economy and is made very good
